While it has undergone many changes - in format, style, name, and leadership - this group has been ministering in the Copper Country since 1996. At that time, a Tech student, Maggie Moore, came to Houghton with stories of a group she had been part of in Marquette, called New Kids on the Rock. She came with a vision for the Copper Country to support another chapter and persuaded Mark Plichta and Anita Quinn to start it, joining six other chapters across Michigan and Minnesota. While this Copper Country chapter always participated by singing two or three songs suggested by the "main" New Kids chapter it was always independent, coming up with its own themes, songs, and style. In 2002, the group chose a more timeless name based on the Bible verse found in Luke 10:1, “After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.” Some might see it as irony, but the group viewed it as Providence that when the final roll was taken for that first season under the new name, there were exactly 72 students on the roster.
In 2005, Mark and Anita led their final season. After ten fruitful years, they felt the Lord calling them to new and different ministries. Todd and Angela Piket humbly stepped into their giant shoes, leading their first season in 2006.
